10 Helpful Things to Say to Someone with Anxiety

How to support an Anxious Loved One with Compassion and Understanding:

When someone you care about is struggling with anxiety, it’s natural to want to make them feel better.

We often say things like: ‘Just stop worrying.’ ‘You’ll be fine.’ ‘You’re overthinking it.’

Unfortunately, although these comments usually come from a place of kindness, they rarely help.

Anxiety isn’t simply a thinking problem. It’s a nervous system response.

When someone feels anxious, the thinking part of the brain becomes less influential while the protective part becomes more active. Their body genuinely feels as though something is wrong.

Trying to argue with anxiety rarely works. Helping someone feel safe often does.

Here are ten simple ways to respond that can help calm both the person and their nervous system:

1. “I’m here with you.”

Sometimes the greatest comfort isn’t advice. It’s presence. An anxious person often feels alone with their thoughts. Knowing someone is calmly beside them immediately reduces that feeling of isolation.

Avoid saying: ‘You’ll be alright.’ Instead, simply be there.

2. “You don’t have to figure everything out right now.”

Anxiety loves certainty. Giving permission to pause reminds the brain that not every answer needs to be found immediately.

3. “Let’s just focus on this moment.”

Anxiety lives in ‘What if?’ Encourage them to notice their breathing, their feet on the floor or the sounds around them.

4. “Let’s take one slow breath together.”

A slow exhale directly influences the autonomic nervous system. Simply breathing slowly yourself often encourages the other person to match your pace.

5. “That sounds really difficult.”

Validation isn’t agreement. It communicates that you understand this feels real for them.

6. “You don’t need to deal with everything today.”

Ask, ‘What’s the next small step?’ One step feels manageable.

7. “You’ve got through difficult days before.”

This gently reminds them that they have coped before, even if anxiety is making them forget.

8. “What would help you feel a little safer right now?”

This shifts attention from the problem towards practical solutions and safety.

9. “It’s okay to take your time.”

Removing pressure helps the nervous system settle. Healing rarely happens through rushing.

10. “I believe in you.”

Anxiety often makes people forget their own strengths. Sometimes borrowing someone else’s belief is enough until they reconnect with their own.

What Not to Say

  • ❌ Just calm down.
  • ❌ Stop worrying.
  • ❌ It’s all in your head.
  • ❌ You’re being irrational.
  • ❌ Other people have it worse.
  • ❌ You need to be stronger.
  • ❌ You’ll get over it.
  • ❌ You’re overreacting.
  • ❌ Why can’t you just think positively?
  • ❌ There’s nothing to worry about.

These responses usually ask the anxious person to stop experiencing something their nervous system is creating automatically. If it were that easy, they would already have done it.

Remember: Anxiety Is a Protective Response

Anxiety isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a brain trying to keep someone safe. Rather than asking ‘How do I stop their anxiety?’, ask ‘How can I help their nervous system feel a little safer?’ Sometimes that safety comes through your calm voice, your patience or your willingness to simply sit beside them.

The Healthful Mind Perspective

At the Healthful Mind Clinic, we believe that lasting change comes from helping the nervous system experience safety—not just understand it. Sometimes the most powerful words you can say are simply:

“You’re safe. I’m here. We’ll take this one step at a time.”

A final note:

Looking after someone with anxiety can be stressful too, so please take the time to learn to look after your own wellbeing. As the saying goes:

“Put your own oxygen mask on first.”
