Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

What is CBT?

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a psychological approach that has been proven to help address a variety of problems from depression, anxiety, alcohol and drug use problems, marital problems, eating disorders, and severe mental illness.

Not only does CBT help address the problem, it has been found to lead to a significant improvement in how the client functions in everyday situation and therefore, their quality of life.

CBT is an approach for which there is ample scientific evidence that the methods developed and employed within this therapy do produce positive changes.

How can CBT help you?

CBT is based on several core principles, including:

  • Psychological problems are based, in part, on faulty or unhelpful ways of thinking.
  • Psychological problems are based, in part, on learned patterns of unhelpful behaviour.
  • People suffering from psychological problems can learn better ways of coping with them, thereby relieving their symptoms and becoming more effective in their lives.

CBT is one of the many ways we can help you to recognise distortions in thinking that are creating or exacerbating your problems, and then to re-evaluate them, coming up with a more realistic or optimistic perspective.

In doing this you will also gain a better understanding of the behaviour and motivation of others.

Alongside this CBT can help you develop:

  • Problem solving skills to cope with difficult situations.
  • A greater sense of confidence in one’s own abilities.
  • New behavioural patterns.
  • Face fears instead of avoiding them.
  • Prepare for potentially problematic interactions with others.

Unlike some other therapies CBT also what is going on in the person’s current life, rather than what has led up to their difficulties, so it works well alongside our other therapies including counselling, coaching, psychotherapy, mindfulness and hypnotherapy.

We also offer Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy, an integration of the 2 therapies that enables a deeper and more complete change experience.
