Not Magic But Neuroscience
Thanks to the popularity of stage hypnosis and illusionists like Derren Brown, there are more myths than truths surrounding hypnotherapy and hypnotherapy services, and the natural state that is hypnosis.
The simple truth is that hypnosis is not magic but neuroscience, with the various exercises and phenomenon used in hypnosis being natural states that occur during our day to day lives. We are just harnessing them for the benefit of our emotional and physical health.
There is so much scientific evidence that is now available due to the advancement in brain imagery, that is definitive proof of how brain activity can be altered and manipulated by using the methods used in hypnosis, but here is an explanation in simple terms.
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic process that involves accessing the mind’s own abilities to rewire and reprogram our responses to both our internal and external world, through using the language that the unconscious mind understands: The breath, the body and the imagination.
During a hypnotherapy session the therapist induces a state of relaxation by guiding the client through various ways of letting go of physical and emotional tension, while attention is guided to be intensely focussed on the area the client wishes to work on. So hypnotherapy myth buster number one; You are not asleep and you do know what is happening! In fact your mind and body is more focussed than under normal circumstances and therefore more receptive to making positive changes.

A State of Relaxation
Hypnotherapy causes the brain to go into a relaxed theta brainwave state which enables us to learn through suggestion and also through our imagination, this is how much of a child’s learning occurs. The more vivid and sensory filled the imaginations are, the harder it is for the brain to distinguish between what is real and what is imagined, which is why books and films are so powerful.
By using imaginations we are then able to revisit or future pace events, seeing and experiencing them from a new more beneficial perspective, thereby creating a new positive reference point for the brain to link back to in any situation.
It is also said that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis as it does require the willingness of the client to participate. When they do so with the expectation that a change will occur, and the conditions are right, then a change does occur. This is why hypnosis has also been described as the ultimate placebo!
Hypnosis is particularly effective for addressing anxious and trauma states due to hypnosis activating the Parasympathetic Nervous System and anxiety being a Sympathetic Nervous System state, it is therefore impossible to be hypnotised and anxious both at the same time. Our hypnotherapy services are designed to put you at ease and for you to get the most out of the sessions allowing you to achieve the positive results and goals you desire.
