Trauma/PTSD

The Effect on Emotional and Physical Health

There are many reasons why someone may be experiencing trauma or PTSD, whether that be from one particular event or from a period of your life where you felt unsafe for whatever reason.

There is a lot of understanding around the impact that these events can have on someone’s emotional and physical health, and the effect that can therefore have on many other aspects of their lives.

Trauma and PTSD do not necessarily come from someone doing something bad to you, though that can be the case, but from being in a situation that triggers a high state or a prolonged state of stress, fear or anxiety.

ACES – Adverse Childhood Experiences are often the cause of traumas and complex PTSD and can result from a wide variety of circumstances but fall into 3 categories: Abuse, Neglect or Household disturbances.

PTSD is defined as an anxiety disorder caused by having witnessed or experienced a traumatic life threatening event, this does not necessarily mean that your life was in danger but someone else’s may have been, for instance in the case of medical staff dealing with the COVID situation.

Whatever the cause, when someone is suffering any kind of trauma, the memory and emotional impact of that situation becomes lodged in their nervous system, leaving them in a constant state of high alert, experiencing flashbacks and being triggered by an increasing number of situations.
