Aromatherapy

What is Aromatherapy?

‘Aroma’ simply means ‘smell’, and ‘therapy’ means a treatment designed to ‘cure’, so together they mean a treatment designed to cure through the use of smell. The word ‘cure’ is from the Latin ‘Curare’ which means to care for.

The sense of smell is the strongest of our five senses which connects us to our surroundings; in fact, it is the only sense that is directly connected to our brain through a unique contact called the olfactory system. This system is sited at the very top of our nasal cavities and goes through to physically touch and connect to the underside of the brain. Our sense of smell can have significant effects to our mental, emotional and physical responses – even if we are unable to ‘smell’ or recognise a scent.

When we think about how our sense of smell works, we automatically think of our nose – for this is where we are told we can ‘smell’. For the most part this is true, but scientists have now discovered that in fact there are olfactory receptor cells found throughout the entire body, especially in locations like the kidneys, digestive tract, muscles, heart tissue, pancreas, liver, lungs and skin. This gives a fresh new take on the importance of our sense of smell, and the role it plays in our physiology and wellbeing.

So how can Aromatherapy help you?

It appears to be much more than we first thought!

How many times have we smelt a scent and it instantly take us back to a memory of an old event or loved one from the distant past? The smell of freshly baked food from our childhood or the perfume/aftershave of a family member? This is because smells and memories are stored in the same section of the brain, and when our noses pick up a scent from our past, it instantly releases that memory. This phenomenon can happen multiple times and over extensive periods of time too.

In a therapy situation, we can capitalise on our bodies ability to do this by actively changing a situation and then anchoring a scent to it.

Then there are the health benefits to our bodies when we use truly pure essential oils. There is growing scientific evidence that our body’s cells know the difference between sub-standard (contaminated and adulterated) essential oils and 100% unprocessed essential oils. The latter results is positive benefits for our mental, emotional and physical health.
